The major challenge was to balance the fusion of 2 major brands. Prince's new album is called Lotus Flower, which had a psychedelic, mysterious, and celestial vibe. Target's brand is about red+white and extremely graphic. After listening to the album, I keyed in on the word "celestial" as the word that the project should be built upon. The direction I chose go explore was to show Prince command the planets and stars with his epic guitar playing. They wanted to harken back to the 60's when Total was first introduced to the world. One of the main challenges was to make an animation that was fun and inviting to watch. (We got to do a little of everything with this project.) We filmed liquid oil lamps to get the psychedelic tunnel at the beginning of the spot. We worked with 3D animators, processing programmers, and and amazing 2D staff that composited all the elements seamlessly together. Gotta give a big shout out to a very talented design Christian De Castro—without him this spot could not have been done. They wanted to see all this inside the world of newspaper article headlines. I immediately thought this could look like a very elegant type driven film title sequence. The storyboards shown are the ones used during the pitch. This is one of those jobs where we had the look down from the beginning. The real challenge was to find transitions and make the whole spot feel cohesive and tell the story of how Hummers Help. This is probably one of my favorite projects I did while I was at Motion Theory. I directed this along with my good friend Mark Kudsi. We had an amazing animation team to work with as well. Directors Mark Kudsi and John Fan created a lively 2 1/2D animated spot celebrating Chrome's revolutionary features with music by Tim Meyers. A Chrome Short by Motion Theory. Intent / Process: The Google creative team came to us with very simple objective. The spot had to show the functions of Chrome in a fun, universal way that would be instantly recognizable as the Google brand. The design challenge was to visually show how fast Chrome works but yet reference the clean, iconic design of the interface. The solution we came up with was to give Chrome a life of its own when it is searching. We see all the active components of the search engine spring to life in a kaleidoscope of colors, shapes and imagery. The animation builds in complexity, dimension and pace as the search progresses. When Chrome is done searching, the animation quiets down to it's clean functional look that's sure to become the next Google product that becomes a part of our lives. CS Africa is a non profit organization that helps the people of Africa through Sustainable Development. This short film was premiered at the World AIDS Conference to spread the word about what CS Africa does. Sustainable development is about education and prevention. What we really wanted to do was make a video that not only inform the people why we are in this situation, but also provide some tangible solution to the troubles in Africa.
